Background of the study

Online communication in Nigeria is increasingly characterized by the use of pragmatic strategies that facilitate effective and nuanced digital discourse. Platforms like Twitter and Instagram have emerged as key sites where users employ distinct pragmatic markers to convey tone, manage interactions, and express identity. Twitter, known for its brevity, forces users to utilize succinct expressions and symbols such as hashtags and emojis to convey complex sentiments, while Instagram integrates visual elements with text, prompting a fusion of verbal and non verbal pragmatic cues (Chinwe, 2023). Nigerian users leverage these platforms to negotiate social norms, express humor, and manage conversational politeness in dynamic and culturally specific ways. The pragmatic strategies used on Twitter often involve the creative use of abbreviations and symbols to signal irony or emphasis, whereas Instagram’s environment encourages more elaborate, context rich narratives that combine images with descriptive captions (Ibrahim, 2024). These distinct communicative practices not only reflect platform constraints but also mirror broader cultural values and identity construction processes in Nigerian society. By systematically comparing pragmatic strategies on Twitter and Instagram, this study aims to reveal how digital environments shape language use and influence user interaction patterns in Nigeria (Emeka, 2025).

Statement of the problem

Although pragmatic strategies in digital communication have garnered attention, limited research has focused on comparing these strategies across different platforms within Nigeria. Existing studies tend to examine either Twitter or Instagram in isolation, overlooking the influence of platform-specific features on pragmatic behavior. This gap hinders our understanding of how digital environments shape communication strategies, particularly in the context of culturally diverse Nigerian discourse (Uche, 2023). Moreover, the lack of comparative analysis prevents the development of comprehensive models that capture the nuances of digital pragmatics, leaving educators and communication professionals without clear guidelines for addressing evolving linguistic trends (Obi, 2024). This study aims to fill this gap by evaluating and comparing pragmatic strategies on Twitter and Instagram in Nigerian digital communication.

Objectives of the study

1. To identify the key pragmatic strategies used on Twitter and Instagram by Nigerian users.

2. To compare how each platform influences the use of these strategies.

3. To propose guidelines for integrating digital pragmatic trends into communication practices.

Research questions

1. What are the predominant pragmatic strategies on Twitter versus Instagram?

2. How do platform features affect these strategies?

3. What implications do these strategies have for effective digital communication?

Significance of the study

This study is significant as it assesses and compares online pragmatic strategies on Twitter and Instagram within Nigerian digital communication. The findings will enhance theoretical understanding of digital pragmatics and provide practical recommendations for educators, communicators, and policymakers in adapting to evolving online interaction styles (Chinwe, 2023; Obi, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study

The study is limited to analyzing pragmatic strategies on Twitter and Instagram among Nigerian users, excluding other social media platforms and offline contexts.

Definitions of terms

• Pragmatic Strategies: Techniques used by speakers to convey meaning beyond literal expressions.

• Digital Communication: Exchange of information via online platforms.
